Whether you are browsing different programs, or you have already been accepted at your dream program, it’s never too early to start thinking about the documents you need to study in Canada.

Most people wishing to study in Canada need to apply for a Study Permit Canada. However, certain people can study without one, such as some minors whose parents are already working or studying in Canada. The second step on the way to your study permit is determining if you’re actually eligible to apply. Unless you’re planning to study at a primary or secondary school, make sure your acceptance letter is from a designated learning institution (DLI). You can find out if your school is a DLI by checking this list. Secondly, you need to be able to show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your studies. While online application system will tell you how to apply, it is always convince the immigration officer that you are a genuine student. So, even if you fulfill the basic requirements, speak to an immigration consultant if you already completed post-secondary education, don’t have strong ties to your home country, or if you just want to be sure you have a strong application.

Where you are located when you submit the Study Permit application is also important. In most situations you have to be outside Canada. If you are already in Canada, you can consult Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada website to see if you are eligible to apply.

The processing of your study permit can take a few months, so it’s good to start the process in advance to avoid disappointment. You might qualify for faster processing under the Student Direct Stream if you are from China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam.

Once your application is approved, you will be able to travel to Canada to get your study permit at the airport or at the border. Although you might be exhausted after a long journey, it is important to check your study permit as soon as it’s issued to make sure there are no errors. For instance, in order to be eligible to work, your study permit has to state that you can accept employment.

While it’s not a one size fit all rule, study permit conditions allow work up to 20 hours a week during school in addition to on campus employment. One can also work full-time during scheduled breaks, but you will need an additional permit if your program has an internship or a co-op component.

Once your studies are finished, your study permit is valid for another 90 days or until the day stated on the permit, whichever is earlier. However, some study programs are eligible for a post graduate work permit that allows one to work up to 3 years after graduation.
