The history of College of Applied Arts and Technology began in 1965 and can easily be divided into three important stages of its growth and development. Firstly, the institution opened its doors as the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Vocational Centre, which later evolved into one of Ontario's community colleges. In 1973 Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology became independent and since then has grown tremendously, adding programs in all disciplines. Today its faculty responds to the postsecondary educational needs of more than 4,500 part-time and full-time students each year.

To ensure quality, accountability, student success, and continuous improvement, Sault College has launched the work of its Quality Assurance office. It supports all the academic planning and decision-making processes in line with the standards set by the Ontario Colleges Quality Assurance Service. Every five years, the college is audited to ensure alignment with the standards through the College Quality Assurance Audit Process.

Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology fully meets the quality standards in the program quality management system, program development, conformity with government requirements, program delivery and student assessment, existence, monitoring and communication of academic policies and practices, and availability and allocation of college-wide resources. Sault College is also a proud member of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, the Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Universities Canada.

The Applied Research Centre at Sault College is committed to helping local and regional enterprises adopt new technologies and develop new and improved products and processes in the areas of Renewable Energy, GIS, Health Informatics, Environment, Automotive, and Heavy Duty Equipment,  Health, and Life Science, Video Gaming, Invasive Species, Electrical, Electronics and IT. 

Many types of federal, provincial, and community funding at Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology are available for applied research projects, including the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Canadian Foundation for Innovation, Ontario Centres of Excellence, National Science, and Engineering Research Council, Social Science and Humanities Research Council, Industry Canada, Canadian Institute of Health Research, and The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. Industry partners are ABB, Ionic Engineering Innovation, Westburne Rexel Group, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Cooperation, NCERC CRSNG, Rockwell Automation, Fednor, Tenaris.

Sault College offers its students a wide range of Full-time programs in the areas of Business, Aviation, Community Services, Engineering Technology, Culinary, General Arts and Science, Health Programs, Information Technology studies, Justice Studies, Language and Communication, Media and Design, Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies, Salon and Spa Services, Skilled Trades and Transportation, Academic Upgrading and Apprenticeship. It is worth mentioning that Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology is home to one of the best-recognized Aviation programs in Canada, that provides Integrated Commercial Pilot License Aircraft including a multi-engine instrument rating.

Sault College Apprenticeship programs prepare students for the careers of Automotive Service Technician, Commercial Vehicle Common Core, Construction and Maintenance Electrician, Cook, Hairstylist, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Industrial Electrician, Ironworker, Parts Technician, Plumber, Steamfitting, Truck and Coach Technician, Utility Arborist. 

Graduate Studies at Sault College provide programs in Global Business Management, Project Management, Health Care Administration, Supply Chain Management, Cybersecurity, Health Informatics, Mobile Application Design, Network Architecture, and Security Analytics, Automated Manufacturing, Robotics and Automation, Gerontology, Health Care Leadership, Professional Nursing Practice, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Natural Resources/Environmental Law. 

Continuing Education programs available at Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology are the online Accommodation and Human Rights Management program, Data Analytics in Business Decision-Making, Early childhood Education Resource Consulting, Engineering Technology Management, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

High-school students in Grade 11 and Grade 12 can join the Dual Credit program at Sault College. It allows them to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and earn high school credits and college credits at the same time. This experience will help them make a successful transition to college or an apprenticeship program and will increase their awareness of various college and apprenticeship pathways. The costs for tuition, books, supplies, and transportation will be covered through the Dual Credit program.

Academic Upgrading programs are also represented at Sault College. Full-time, Part-time, and Distance programs offer learners a chance to prepare for college-level and apprenticeship programs at any time during the year. With flexible course delivery, year-round intake, and self-paced learning options, Academic Upgrading programs meet the needs of a diverse student population. It is worth mentioning, that students who choose Academic Upgrading programs have the opportunity to take a college course free-of-charge.

Admission requirements for a Full-time program at Sault College include the equivalent of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma at the college preparation level or higher; at least 18 years of age by the end of the first semester; English proficiency results; copies of the original documents and if they are not in English - their notarized translations. Sault College programs may also have some program-specific requirements, that will be mentioned in their description on the institution`s site. 

Sault College On-campus Residence offers comfortable and spacious single, premium single, double, and barrier-free rooms. A full kitchen on every floor, laundry, cable, internet, and local telephone services come standard.
