International students must meet UPEI's specific English language requirements that differ depending on a chosen program. The University also offers applicants, who do not meet the UPEI language requirements but have conditional admission to a degree program, an intensive English Academic Preparation program. It helps students to develop their English skills and begin their Degree program as soon as possible. The courses are targeted at building academic writing, critical thinking, reading, listening comprehension, oral communication skills for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. The English Academic Program is divided into three categories known as EAP, EAP Bridging Program, and Graduate EAP.
This University is known for its beautiful 140-acre home campus that consists of 30 administrative, academic, residential, and athletics buildings and facilities, the newest of which is the 76,000-square-foot Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering building opened in 2016. UPEI is known all over the province for its perfect sports and recreation facilities. No matter what sport or fitness goal students may have – competitive, recreational, or personal – they will receive the support they need to reach it. Over the past fifty years, the sports facilities have grown considerably, including the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, synthetic-surface sports field, and the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place track and field facility. The community-based Bell Aliant Centre, featuring competitive and leisure pools, and MacLauchlan Arena with two NHL-sized ice surfaces are also located here. The University of Prince Edward Island campus is also home to the National Research Council’s Institute.
