While immigration to Canada offers limitless career opportunities, a high standard of living, and some of most beautiful views in the world, living an ocean away from your family can be very challenging.

Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada understand the importance of family reunification and offer several options to help you spend time with your parents and grandparents in Canada.

The first option is for your relatives to apply for a visitor visa for parents. This visa can be up to ten years and it will allow them to stay in Canada for 6 months at a time. The validity of this visa cannot extend the validity of one’s passport, so it’s a good idea to renew one’s passport in order to avoid having to reapply. It’s also important to be able to show that your relatives can support themselves in Canada, and that they have strong ties to their home country. Even if your relatives don’t have sufficient funds to support themselves in Canada, you can write a letter expressing your commitment to provide financial support and include proof of your finances instead of theirs.

Your relatives can apply for a visitor visa online, and it will cost them $100. They might also have to pay additional $85 for their biometrics. The system will tell them if they need biometrics or not. Of course, if your family members are from a visa-exempt country, they will only need to pay $7 CAD for an eTA instead.

Once your parents or grandparents are in Canada, they have the option of either extending stay by applying for a visitor record, or they will need to leave the country and come back for another six months. The first option requires them to pay an additional $100, and they will need to show that they have good reasons to continue their stay, sufficient finances, and ties to their home country. If your relatives choose to leave Canada, they will not have to pay any additional costs as long as their visa is still valid, and it allows multiple entries.

In general, a visitor visa is a perfect option for those who don’t plan to stay in Canada more than 6 months at a time.

However, if you want your relatives stay in Canada longer than 6 months and you want to avoid spending money on new applications and flight tickets twice a year, there is another option.

CIC Super visa is a perfect option for those who need to stay in Canada longer. For example, if you have small children and you want your parents to help you out before it’s time for your children to go to kindergarten. Due to high costs of hiring caregivers, many families would rather have their parents or grandparents help with the little ones.

The difference between a visitor visa and a Super visa is that only parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents can use the Super visa, while visitor visa is available to all. A super visa application package also includes an invitation letter from your Canadian relative, and medical insurance for super visa for the entire duration of your stay. The proof of funds is a very important part of the Super visa application, and the Canadian relative will need to show that they can financially support their parents and grandparents during their stay. Visit the government website to find out more about super visa income requirements, and information on how to apply for super visa.

Once you review the requirements and gather your documents, you should be able to apply for super visa and start looking forward to your family reunion.
