When it comes to Study Permits, the golden standard is that your document should be valid 90 days after your studies end.
However, sometimes your studies might extend the validity of your study permit. Luckily, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada offer the option of applying for an extension.
In order to be eligible to apply, you need to make sure that your institution is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). You can verify if the school is a DLI by checking this list. In order to avoid disappointment, always check if your school is a DLI before submitting your application.
You can submit your Study Permit Extension application online. In order to ensure your application is complete, make sure you submit proof of enrollment at a DLI, show that you can financially support yourself while in Canada, and upload any other documents that are requested through the online application system checklist. Remember that IRCC cannot issue a Study Permit that extends the validity of your passport – so make sure you contact your country’s consulate if your passport is about to expire.
Your Study Permit extension fee is $150. You might have to pay additional fees If you have not done your biometrics or if IRCC need you to do a medical exam. If you are submitting your application online, the system will tell you if you need to do either based on your answering a few questions.
Once you’ve submitted a complete application you can continue studying as long as you submitted the application before your status as a student expired. If current status already expired, but you need to continue studying, you will have to submit an application to restore your status as a student instead. You can check the government website to find out it will take for your application to be processed.

Whether you apply online or at the Port of Entry, once your application is approved, you can relax and keep studying without worrying about immigration. However, wait a second before you book that vacation you had to postpone due to implied status. While Study Permit allows you to continue studying in Canada, it does not give you the right to re-enter Canada if you decide to travel outside the country. Make sure you have a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), or apply for one once your extension is approved. There is a small exception – If you are from a visa-required country, and your visa expired or is only valid for a single entry, you still might be able to travel to the USA or St. Pierre and Miquelon with a study permit.
