Study in Canada India: Study Permit Application

After you have applied to the Designated Learning Institution and received a Letter of Acceptance, then you need to apply for a study permit. It is the official document that allows you to study in Canada and come to Canada with study permit from India. The good news is that residents of India and several other Asian countries can apply for a study permit through the SDS (Student Direct Stream) Program. It allows processing the study permit applications faster and more effectively.

If you want to know whether you are eligible to apply for a study permit through SDS, you need to meet several requirements.

  1. You should have a Letter of Acceptance from a post-secondary Designated Learning Institution.
  2. You should prove that you have paid the tuition fee for the first study year.
  3. You have to live outside of Canada during the process of application.
  4. You must demonstrate that you have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of 10,000 CAD.
  5. You need to submit the most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s).
  6. If you wish to study in Quebec, you need to have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration.
  7. You need to provide your language test results. If you wish to study at a French-speaking educational institution, you need to pass a TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) that is equal to a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) with a score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). If you want to study at an English-speaking school, you have to pass an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) general training or academic score of 6.0 or higher in each skill (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
  8. If it is required, you need to get a medical exam before applying.
  9. If it is required, you should get a police certificate before applying.

Many international students want to stay and work in Canada after they graduate. Then they can apply for a PGWP - Post-Graduation Work Permit. After you study in Canada, you can be eligible for a PGWP, but you have to provide evidence that the program of your study was taken in Canada at one of the designated learning institutions such as a public post-secondary college, a trade or technical school, a university, a private post-secondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as public institutions and is authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees (an associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree).
