The Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology was founded in 1967 in Timmins, Ontario. Today it also has campuses in Kirkland Lake, Haileybury, and Moosonee and serves more than 65 communities within the Northeastern Ontario region.
The Northern College offers its students 75 Full-Time, Part-Time, Certificate, Diploma, and Apprenticeship programs. It also provides access to hundreds of in-class, web-based, and correspondence courses to satisfy the needs of diverse student groups. Post-Secondary, Career-Entrance Preparation, and Academic Upgrading programs are also available at the institution. The annual number of full-time, part-time, and continuing education students exceeds 12,000.
The Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology is affiliated with the Universities Canada, the Colleges and Institutes Canada, and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. The institution is also proud of its broad network of Canadian and international partners that includes Anhui Communications Vocational and Technical College, Henan Economy and Trade Vocational College, Chongqing Industry Polytechnic, Xinxiang University, Guangxi International Business Vocational College, Taizhou University, Hunan Industry Polytechnic, Taishan University, Jiangxi College of Applied Technology, Shanxi Engineering Vocational College.

Students who choose the Business program at Northern College will be introduced to a combination of courses that suit their interests and needs: Accounting, Marketing, Community Economic and Social Development, or Human Resource Management. Career opportunities available for graduates are positions in business and industry, accounting firms, non-profit organizations, or government agencies.
The Business – Accounting program provides students with the knowledge and skills in Marketing, Human Resources Management, Math, Business, manual, and computerized accounting software programs. It is worth mentioning that the Canadian Payroll Association and the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping recognize these Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology courses.
Northern College`s Business – Marketing program equips students with high-tech marketing and E-commerce skills. They learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans, and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. Other Business programs available at Northern College include Business Fundamentals, Global Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology, Law Clerk, Office Administration General, and Executive.
The Addictions Counsellor program is designed for students or professionals who have a background or diploma in Social or Health Sciences or Community Services. Joining the program they gain specialized knowledge and skills in the area of Addictions Counselling with hands-on practical experience during the Addiction Treatment Approaches Practice Lab and the fieldwork placement component of the program.
The one-year Certificate program in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Northern College introduces learners` to the knowledge of various emotional and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents including treatments, characteristics, and causal factors. They are taught how to use effective intervention strategies to manage aggressive behavior and how to apply evidence-based intervention techniques when dealing with individuals with a variety of identifications.
Northern College Early Childhood Education program prepares students for a career in daycare centers, nursery schools, toy-lending libraries, family resource centers, college daycare labs, friendship centers, Ontario Early Years Centres, hospital playrooms, early learning literacy programs, agencies or recreation departments, and Full-day early learning programs in JK/SK classrooms.
The Social Service Worker program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events. They learn how to intervene in crisis situations and develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families, and communities. Clinical practice labs and field placements help students to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment, and planning.
The Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology offers its students 19 programs in Engineering Technology and Trades: Building Inspection Technician, Computer Engineering Technician, Electrical Engineering Technician, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technician, Electrical Engineering Technician – Level 3 for Instrumentation Graduates, Environmental Technician: Water and Wastewater Systems Operations, Electrical Engineering Technology, Heavy Equipment Techniques, Instrumentation, and Control Engineering Technician, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technician, Mechanical Technician - Industrial Millwright, Mining Engineering Technician, Mechanical Techniques - Industrial Millwright, Mineral Exploration Techniques, Motive Power Technician - Automotive Service, Motive Power Technician - Heavy Equipment, and Pre-Technology.
Northern College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program provides opportunities for students to practice nursing skills in state of the art nursing practice labs, and work with specialized software packages and web-based tools, many of which are used in health-care settings. To provide an excellent opportunity for practice, students experience firsthand community-based nursing, as Northern College utilizes its on-site Family Health Team clinic where they can work within an interdisciplinary health care team. It is also worth mentioning, that in partnership with Laurentian University, nursing students are able to complete all four years of the BScN program at Northern College.
Other Health Sciences and Emergency Services programs available at the institution include Health Care Management, Emergency Management, Terrorism and Pandemic Response, Esthetician Spa Management, Massage Therapy, Medical Laboratory Technician, Occupational Therapist Assistant or Physiotherapist Assistant, Practical Nursing, Paramedic, Personal Support Worker, Police Foundations, Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees, and Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training.
The Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology Veterinary Sciences provides programs in Animal Grooming, Companion Animal Physical Rehabilitation, Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician, and Veterinary Technology - Wildlife Rehabilitation. The Welding Engineering Technology programs open at Northern College include preparation in Welding Design - International, Welding Engineering Technician - Inspection, Welding Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Technician - Welding Fitter.
The Post-Secondary Preparation programs cover a wide range of students` needs and are available in a number of fields - Academic and Career Entrance, Academic Upgrading, College Vocational, and General Arts and Science.
The application process for the international students who want to enter the Northern College of Arts and Technology starts via Ontario Colleges (OCAS) - International, the non-refundable application fee is 100 CAD.
Northern College`s Student Residences are available at the Timmins and Haileybury campuses. The Timmins Campus Residence offers rooms with private four-piece bathrooms, beds, closets, desks, chairs, lamps, drawers, and connections for the Internet, telephone, and cable TV. Students can use a large common kitchen with cooking stations, laundry facilities, lounges with cable television, and a games room.
