North Island College (NIC) began its history in 1975. Located on the traditional territories of the combined 35 First Nations, NIC served the population of the Vancouver Island coastal towns and villages. Initially opted for distance education, today North Island College has four modern campuses and three educational centers that attract students from all over Canada and the world.
The main and the largest campus is situated in Comox Valley. Campbell River town is home to one more campus and the Vigar Vocational Center. Port Alberni has two NIC facilities - a campus and the Tebo Vocational Center. There is also an educational center in Ucluelet and the fourth campus is in Port Hardy. Such infrastructure of North Island College offers Faculty and students a lot of academic and extracurricular opportunities in different locations of Vancouver Island.
NIC provides high-quality, affordable education and skill training for adults. North Island College has over 80 agreements with partner institutions in British Columbia, Canada, and abroad. In collaboration with the British Columbia Council on Admission and Transfer, it supports students’ transition to the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island University, the University of British Columbia, and many other universities in Canada and the world. NIC is also proud to have international education partners in Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Scotland, USA, Vietnam, and the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific.
Many NIC courses can be transferred to the university of a student's choice. Learners can start their degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, English, Humanities, and Social Science. Students are encouraged to create their own transfer plans with over twenty study areas available.
The Office of Global Engagement coordinates the international work of the college. Its tasks are to help learners who seek to experience studies or work abroad and to support international students who came to North Island. Their number exceeds 500 and they represent more than 30 different countries of the world. The Office also organizes workshops and events dedicated to internationalization and students` global engagement. Orientational sessions are traditional for the beginning of every semester.
North Island College offers a wide range of programs and pathways for international students. If they do not meet the English language requirements of the institution, they can choose one of the NIC Language Pathway partners like ILSC Language Schools, ILAC International Language Academy of Canada, Global Village, ELS Canada, Hansa Language Center, LSI Education, and Rosedale Academy.
NIC offers its applicants assistance of educational advisors, who can help to choose the best educational goal for an individual. Areas of study available at North Island College are Health and Human Services, Trades and Technical, STEM, Fine Art, Business, Tourism and Hospitality, Office Administration, Humanities and Social Sciences, Digital Design Development. Students can get a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting, Marketing, and Management, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (in partnership with Vancouver Island University). Accessible learning options are also available.
English courses available at North Island College cover a wide range of topics, levels, and specializations. Starting from Fundamental English to advanced courses like First People Literature and Composition, Technical and Academic Writing and Critical Analysis, Introduction to Creative Writing: Fiction and Nonfiction, Advanced Communication and Professional Writing, Women's Literature, Introduction to Canadian Literature and many others.

Flexible learning plans, tailored to the individual needs of each student, include a wide range of upgrading courses: English, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, First Nation Studies. Adult Basic Education and BC Adult Graduation Diploma programs are also available.
Transfer programs are also available for international students with a valid study permit.
North Island College offers its students a number of housing options. In partnership with the Canada Homestay Network, it provides homestay services with a variety of placement options. Living with a host family guarantees newcomers support, friendly environment, and comfortable immersion in Canadian lifestyle and culture. Local hotels also provide short-term accommodation for students, who did not organize their living arrangements before the arrival.
