Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is one of the largest public undergraduate universities in British Columbia. Founded in 1981, today it has five campuses in Newton, Richmond, Cloverdale, Whalley, and Langley. The institution offers its 20,000 students a wide range of undergraduate and vocational training programs. The choice includes Bachelor`s and Associate`s degrees, diplomas, certificates, apprenticeships, and citations.
KPU is a proud member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Colleges and Institutes Canada, the International Association of Universities, the Canadian Bureau for International Education, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Canadian University Press. The National Survey of Student Engagement listed the University as one of the top Canadian institutions relative to student participation and quality of education.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University has high-tech labs, studios, classrooms, and facilities to offer its students. In 2018, the New Wilson School of Design building was opened. Fitness centers and workout spaces on each campus offer students a variety of sport and recreational activities.
KPU is the only polytechnic university in Canada and in addition to traditional academics, it focuses on hands-on skills. The educational approach goes beyond books, students participate in group projects, prepare presentations, meet guest speakers, and more. The majority of KPU programs include work experience terms, practicums, and cooperative education plans. International learning opportunities include Field Schools, Exchanges, and Study Abroad programs. The University has partners among various industry representatives and organizations, that guarantee the best preparation of the graduates.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University is known for its student-centered learning environment. Small class sizes aid close and effective communication between students, instructors, guest lecturers, and industry experts. The faculty boasts extensive real-world experience in the field and a passion for teaching. Over 70 researchers are working now on active sponsored research projects.
30 student services are open on the campuses. Almost $2 million are available for students` scholarships and awards, bursaries and other financial aid. Advising services help applicants to design their course plans and career options. Each campus has a Learning Center that offers additional tutoring services, study resources, and workshops. It is worth mentioning, that a free intercampus shuttle travels between Surrey, Langley, and Cloverdale for the needs of KPU students.
KPU offers more than 120 diverse degrees, diploma, certificate, and citation programs, some of them are unique and can't be found at other post-secondary institutions in Canada. For example, Fashion and Technology and Product Design degrees are unique to Western Canada. The University offers the only brewing diploma in British Columbia and the first brewing program in Canada to be recognized by the Master Brewers Association. KPU’s undergraduate degree in Urban Ecosystems is the only of this kind in North America and KPU Interior Design program was the first in the province to receive accreditation.
Another unique feature of the institution is its Tuition-free English language studies and upgrading courses. A flexible study plan gives students an opportunity to take courses full-time or part-time with classes in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Online courses are also available.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University offers 120 programs in the fields of Academic and Career Advancement, Business, Design, Arts, Health, Science and Horticulture, and Trades and Technology. Co-op Education is available in several Arts, Business, and Science and Horticulture programs. They allow students to learn and build professional networks simultaneously. Study abroad and Field School opportunities are also available for students and are the best way to prepare them for a global marketplace. Career Services at KPU provide coaching and job-finding resources for graduates. Part-time work and summer employment options are also available.
KPU Admission Requirements include a graduate of a BC secondary school or an equivalent school system. For a Transfer program, an applicant must successfully complete 24 or more undergraduate credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or greater and English Proficiency Requirements (High school or undergraduate course, KPU course, or testing). Additional requirements are determined by the Faculties.
KPU also offers its new Pathway to Undergraduate Studies program that supports learners in their pursuit of academic success. The program provides a limited number of undergraduate courses and the upgrading course of English for undergraduate admission. Pathway students can choose one the Faculties: Arts, Business, Design, Health, Science and Horticulture, Trades, and Technology. This educational model pairs upgrading and undergraduate studies with guided support. Students have an option to begin work toward their intended undergraduate program. The Pathway program brings clarity to the admission process, creates parity in the options KPU provides to native and non-native English upgraders.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University does not provide on-campus housing facilities. The Student Association has a partnership with Off-Campus Housing 101 that provides a free website for students who are looking to find off-campus housing. Homestay Programs and other accommodation services are available by the Students Association’s recommendation.
KPU Tuition Fees are usually assessed at a rate per credit. International students Tuition Fee is approximately 729 CAD per credit. Confirmation deposits secure students` seat offer at KPU, Open Intake Programs deposit is 2,000 CAD and Limited Intake Programs deposit is 2,500 CAD.
