Immigration to Canada Iraq

The Western Asian country, Iraq, is bordered by Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. The total population of the state is above 40 million people, the majority of them are Muslims. Other religions include Christians, Mandaeans, Yezidis, Yarsans, and Zoroastrianism. Iraq’s official languages are Arabic and Kurdish. The country also recognizes English, Neo-Aramaic, Turkish, and Armenian as regional languages.

Due to a strategic location, Iraq is an emerging middle power in the region. Nevertheless, the political history of the state includes periods of significant economic growth, as well as periods of instability. Due to the political uncertainty, many residents of Iraq investigate the ways of immigration to Canada. Today, there are more than 50,000 Canadians of full or partial Iraqi descent.

Study Immigration to Canada from Iraq

Since Iraq has a developing education system, many students decide to pursue their studies in Canada. Then, international students can use their education for further immigration to Canada. If students from Iraq want to work in the country after graduation for up to three years, they should apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). To obtain the permit, international students must complete at least a two-year full-time study program at a public educational institution.

When students from Iraq gain at least a year of work experience under the PGWP, they can apply for immigration to Canada. They can use the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). International students who want to apply for immigration to Canada under CEC must have a year of work experience and work under the NOC (National Occupation Classification) Skill Type 0 (Zero), A or B. If citizens of Iraq decide to apply under PNP, they ought to have the required work experience and obtain a job offer included in one of the NOC Skill Type 0, A or B categories.

Work Immigration to Canada from Iraq

One of the most effective ways of settling abroad is work immigration to Canada. Due to the shortage of workers in Canada, residents of Iraq help local businesses to meet labour needs. Therefore, the Government of Canada launched the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). To hire the worker under the TFWP, the employer must get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) that shows Canadians are not interested in this position. Then, the citizen of Iraq needs to provide a copy of LMIA with the work permit application.

Residents of Iraq who are exempt from the LMIA can work in Canada under the International Mobility Program (IMP). The LMIA exemption categories that can apply for the IMP include spouses and common-law partners of foreign workers and international students, the inland permanent residence applicants, bridging open work permit applicants, vulnerable workers, refugees, occupation-restricted open work permits for caregivers, Canada World Youth Program applicants, professional athletes, family members of foreign representatives and military personnel, applicants for secondary and post-secondary co-op programs, post-graduation work permits applicants, and International Experience Canada: Working Holidays participants. It should be noted that IMP can be used only if the position serves the cultural and social development of Canada.

Once citizens of Iraq gain a year or more of work experience under one of the programs, they can apply for immigration to Canada through CEC or PNP.

Family Sponsorship to Canada from Iraq

Immigration to Canada is also possible under the family sponsorship program. Spouses, common-law and conjugal partners who live in Iraq can be sponsored by the citizens and permanent residents of Canada under the Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship Program.

Canadians can also sponsor their dependent children who reside in Iraq. For immigration to Canada, adopted and biological children must be under 22 years old and do not have a spouse or partner.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can also apply for the sponsorship of their parents and grandparents. In certain circumstances, they can even sponsor their orphaned family members and other siblings who live in Iraq. For immigration to Canada under the special program, orphaned brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren must be related by blood and be under 18 years old.

Immigration to Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades Programs

One more option for immigration to Canada is the Express Entry programs. One of them is the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) which allows citizens of Iraq without Canadian work experience to apply for permanent residence. To qualify for this program, foreign workers ought to meet the following requirements.

  2. Applicants should take the recognized English or French Language Proficiency Test and meet Level 7 of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).
  3. Residents of Iraq need to provide Canadian secondary education credentials or their foreign equivalent.

For immigration to Canada under the FSWP, citizens of Iraq need to get at least 67 out of a possible 100 points. Additionally, applicants should have enough funds to support themselves after immigration to Canada.

The second program of the Express Entry stream is the Federal Skilled Trades Program which is suitable for residents of Iraq who are skilled in a particular trade. For immigration to Canada under this program, the applicants must fulfill the eligibility requirements.

  1. Citizens of Iraq should get at least two years of skilled work experience within the last five years. Six skilled trades groups are included in the NOC Skill Type B.
  2. They ought to have a job offer for at least a year or a Certificate of Qualification from a provincial or territorial body.
