Fleming College was founded in 1967 in Peterborough, Ontario. The institution is named after Sir Sandford Fleming, a famous engineer, and inventor. Today it is home to more than 16,000 students, 7,000 of whom are full-time learners. The main campus of Fleming College is known as Sutherland, others are Frost Campus in Lindsay, Haliburton, and Cobourg Campuses.
The College is proud that more than 80% of Fleming graduates who enter the labor force have jobs within six months of graduation, the employer satisfaction rate is 93%. The overall student satisfaction is also high and exceeds 80%.
Fleming College is popular among international students. International Student Services department provides incoming learners from different countries of the world with the necessary information for a successful transition to Canada. From the moment of their arrival, they are surrounded by the care and support of the Fleming College team. A number of services provided include housing, health insurance, peer mentoring, arrival services, student council, and international student orientation, free airport pick-up, student advising, rich extracurricular program, cultural trips, and events.
Today, Fleming College offers more than 130 full-time programs in the fields of Business, Arts and Heritage, Environmental, and Natural Resource Sciences, Health and Wellness, General Arts and Sciences, Skilled Trades and Technology, Justice, and Community Development, and Continuing Education. Students have access to International Education programs, Apprenticeships, and Co-ops, Advanced Standing programs, Post-Graduate programs, programs for Workplace Graduates, Academic Upgrading, Second Career Training, and Indigenous Fleming programs.
The Apprenticeship Training at Fleming College is based on Ontario’s Apprenticeship Certification Act. Together with professional training, all apprentices are required to attend classes in trade training and related academic subjects. Fleming College combines the required practical experience and theory in its Apprenticeship programs that are led by fully qualified instructors in well-equipped, industrial technical shops. The choice of programs include Arboriculture, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, Chef Training and Culinary Management, Heavy Equipment Techniques, Mechanical Techniques (Plumbing), Welding and Fabrication Techniques.
Fleming College`s programs for Workplace Graduates are developed for applicants who have an OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (e) level, including English. Students who graduate are ready to enter the workforce or continue their education at Fleming. The programs offered are a one-year Certificate program in Blasting Techniques, a three-semester Diploma program that prepares for a career as an Esthetician, a 12-week Certificate program for Heavy Equipment Operators, a two-semester Certificate program in Mechanical Techniques (Plumbing), the Outdoor and Adventure Education four-semester Certificate program, a two-semester Personal Support Worker Certificate program and a two-semester Certificate program in Trades Fundamentals that allows direct entry into the second semester of some other Fleming programs.
The Second Career program was developed by the Ontario government to help unemployed workers to train for new careers in growing areas of the Canadian economy. Today the program is available at Fleming College. It provides up to $28,000 for assistance in paying for tuition, books, transportation, other instructional costs, and a basic living allowance. This cost-sharing grant is provided on the basis of need, so applicants may be asked to contribute to their training or education. The factors that are considered to receive funding include applicant`s job search activity, length of unemployment, educational background, work history, labor market prospects, training request, and experience and occupational skills.
Fleming College is known for the Pathways to further education programs. The institution is proud of its formal transfer agreements with Canadian universities such as Trent University in Peterborough and the University of Guelph. Among the international partner-institutions are Charles Sturt University, the Hartpury University, the Institute of Technology Tralee, Griffith University, the Lake Superior State University, the Limerick Institute of Technology, the Wayne State University, the Robert Gordon University, the Institute of Technology Sligo, and the Institute of Technology Carlow. Options available include Certificate to Diploma, Certificate to Degree, Diploma to Diploma, Diploma to Advanced Diploma, Diploma to General Degree, and Advanced Diploma to Honors Degree.
Applicants with university or college credentials or credits may be eligible for Advanced Standing in one of 70 Fleming College Diploma programs. A choice of programs includes Ecosystem Management Technology, Educational Support, Environmental Technician, Police Foundations, Recreation, and Leisure Services, Resources Drilling Technician with an optional Co-op, Tourism and Global Travel.
Fleming College Post-Graduate programs are designed to add specialized skills to a college diploma or university degree. The choice of full-time programs includes Advanced Water Systems Operations and Management Co-op, Applied Planning (Environmental), Aquaculture Co-op, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, Conservation and Environmental Law Enforcement, Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management, Emergency Management and Business Continuity, Environmental Visual Communication, Expressive Arts, Geographic Information Systems (Applications Specialist), Geographic Information Systems (Cartographic Specialist), Global Business Management, Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance with an optional Co-op, Independent Studio Practice, International Business Management, Mechatronics, Museum Management and Curatorship, Project Management, Supply Chain Management (Global Logistics), Sustainable Agriculture Co-op, Sustainable Waste Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Wireless Information Networking. Some programs like Food And Nutrition Management and Geographic Information Systems (Applications Specialist) are available online. Part-time Post-Graduate online programs are Autism and Behavioural Science, Leadership in Sustainable Business Practices, Patient Navigator and Restorative Practices, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
International Students` Admission Requirements and Application processing time depend on a chosen program and the country of the applicants. Proof of English proficiency is needed for all the programs.
Fleming College Student Residences are located at Lindsay and Peterborough campuses. The residences provide wireless internet, smoke-free living environment, air-conditioning, convenient parking lot available, 24 hr onsite laundry facilities, outdoor basketball, and volleyball courts, and a barbecue area, limited indoor bicycle storage, individual mailboxes, social, recreational, academic, and cultural programs, safe environment with individual keys, card access to the building, well-lit walkways. Fleming College Residence Life Staff is available 24 hours a day. Both Residences have their Code of Behaviour and all housing services are designed to ensure students get the best accommodation experience.
