ECLC was founded in 1998 by Donna-Lynn Leblanc and Sheila Nunn. What started as three classrooms, three teachers, and three students soon grew into a popular and respected private career college. It is also worth mentioning, that ECLC is the oldest language school in Halifax still owned by the original owners. Today it boasts more than 200 students and 17 classrooms, open for applicants from different countries of the world since 2014 when the Province of Nova Scotia allowed all international students to study at the school.

The University College Pathway program at East Coast Language College provides a unique combination of English language study with academic preparation. It prepares students to succeed in an English-speaking university or college setting. Program graduates have direct access to numerous degree programs at partner universities and colleges in Canada that include Brock University, Bishop`s University, the University of Prince Edward Island, the University of Regina, the Mount Alsion University, St. Mary`s University, the Lakehead University, the University of King`s College, St. Lawrence College, the Mount Saint Vincent University and many others.
There is also an option - the Post-Graduate Pathway program that prepares students for graduate-level studies in Canada. The course is focused on linguistic skills and authentic practice that mimics the expectations of their respective programs. Most importantly, successful graduates of this course will have direct access to select graduate programs in Canada with no IELTS or TOEFL score required.
The English for Communication program at East Coast Language College is designed for students who need to improve their listening and speaking skills and to communicate effectively in daily social situations. Through community integration, team projects, and interactive activities, students learn practical language and vocabulary skills that will help them in any setting. The course focuses on building students’ abilities in pronunciation, intonation, fluency, accuracy, negotiation, turn-taking, reciprocal conversation, presentation delivery, and polite debate. Its objectives vary and depend on the class and level.
The East Coast Language College IELTS program helps students to acquire the skills they need to succeed on the IELTS proficiency test. Students are introduced to the structure of the test and how it is assessed. The IELTS Preparation course prepares students for all four sections of the test by combining language development and authentic test practice. The Intensive course is designed to get students to a level of language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.0. The focus is on the intensive practice of language skills rather than test-taking strategies. The Mastering IELTS course is designed for high-level students who wish to focus on preparing for the IELTS test and reach their linguistic goals.
East Coast Language College also offers its attendees the Business English for the Workplace course that is focused on the preparation of students for a successful career in the world of international business. During the program, they learn workplace and intercultural language skills and relevant business discussion topics, build their lexical resources, memorize useful expressions, idioms, and collocations to enhance accuracy and fluency. Also, they are introduced to the practical business skills on how to manage meetings, socialize and network, create cover letters and resumes, take part in interviews, give presentations, and improve team and leadership skills.
The ECLC course developed for Teaching English to Young Learners gives students a practical, task-based, and participatory learning experience. They get the opportunity to explore how children acquire a second language and learn how to create activities, lesson plans, and study materials. The unique English for Parents program at ECLC is a three-level course that provides parents of school-aged children with solid foundational English. It also helps parents to learn everyday English and adapt smoothly to life in Canadian society. The duration of each level is 15 weeks and includes 20 hours of class time per week.
The ACE TESOL Certificate course is also available at East Coast Language College. It provides its participants with the tools, strategies, skills, and knowledge needed to be successful in teaching adults English. TESL Canada recognizes this course for the Standard One Professional Certification, it gives its participants the qualification to teach English in Canada or abroad. The program is based on 100 instructional hours.
East Coast Language College also accommodates special group projects by designing unique custom programs like the Hotel English course, the Financial English course, the Medicine English course, the Teaching English to Young Learners course, and the Business English course. Summer and Winter Group programs are also available.
East Coast Language College encourages its students to participate in the Homestay Program that is the best way to improve English, learn more about Canadian culture, and adapt to a new life in Halifax, Nova Scotia. All the homestay families are carefully selected by the ECLA Accommodations Coordinator. Other accommodation options like International Student Residence, International Hostel or Student Houses are also available.
