Capilano University (CapU) is a teaching-focused public university founded in 1968 in North Vancouver. The institution is named after Chief Joe Capilano, the leader of Squamish people in 1895-1910. The Campus is located on a beautiful territory covered with natural forests and close to the North Shore Mountains. The majority of the programs are offered at this Campus and it is approximately a 30-minute drive from Downtown Vancouver. A smaller regional Campus referred to as the kálax-ay Sunshine Coast Campus in Sechelt, British Columbia, and the third one was open in September 2019, in Lower Lonsdale.
In 2018, CapU celebrated its 50th-anniversary. The Prime Minister of Canada remarked that Capilano University empowered thousands of Canadians and people from around the world. Its alumni are artists of all kinds and educators and executives in every field. Above all, they’re leaders.
CapU became Canada's first university to receive accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in Washington in 2012. Capilano University's degree programs are approved by the British Columbia’s Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training.
CapU is known for its class sizes of 25-35 students and personalized teaching and learning approaches. In 2018, the British Columbia Student Outcomes Research Forum found that 97 percent of bachelor's degree students at Capilano University were satisfied with their education. The university boasts a 96 percent job placement rating amongst its graduates of bachelor's degree programs.
CapU`s offers 97 programs in five main areas of study: Arts and Sciences, Business and Professional Studies, Education, Health and Human Development, Fine and Applied Arts, Global and Community Studies.
CapU’s Arts and Sciences programs and courses cover a wide variety of disciplines from English and languages to history, art history, and philosophy. School of Humanities offers programs and courses that stimulate students` curiosity and help them to develop flexible thinking and critical literacy skills.
School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focuses on innovative thinking and keen observation through a blend of small-class lectures, well-equipped labs, and hands-on fieldwork. Students are introduced to the foundational sciences of chemistry and biology, mathematical studies, statistics, physics, computing, and data science. CapU Engineering Transfer programs are recognized across British Columbia for the quality of the students.
CapUSchool of Social Sciences examines how social phenomena influence the experience of individuals from the perspective of whole societies. The study emphasis is put on research methods, statistics, and critical thinking. Students get transferable skills that they can apply in a wide range of careers, including business, law, education, and social services.
At CapU's School of Business, students receive a thorough and practical business education with a focus on leadership. They learn in small-sized classes led by instructors with real-world experience: case studies and real-life problem solving, and additional opportunities for experience through clubs, competitions, and field schools.
At School of Communication students are introduced to the foundational skills of professional writing, editing, and presentations, and later go on to a critical analysis of communication industries, media, and messages. CapU's School of Legal Studies prepares students for success in legal administration and paralegal services. Students graduate with workplace-ready skills and a range of career options, from law offices and corporate teams to government organizations and non-profits.
Education, Health and Human Development programs lead to degrees, diplomas, and certificates. They emphasize personal growth, professional skills development, and real-life work experience. Students who are missing a grade 11 or 12 courses as a prerequisite for the university program can take CapU`s Adult Basic Education courses to satisfy their missing prerequisites, improve their GPA, and complete their Grade 12 graduation requirements. Another option is a College and University Preparation program that offers the support applicants need to make a successful start. The English for Academic Purposes Department provides a wide range of courses that help to improve the English language skills needed at university.
School of Allied Health offers one of the most innovative and progressive health care curriculums in Canada. Through degree, diploma, and certificate programs students can study rehabilitation, music therapy, or personal health care assistance. CapU`s programs go beyond theory to focus on hands-on learning, from work practicums to supervised clinical placements in a variety of health care settings.
School of Education and Childhood Studies at CapU offers programs in Early Childhood Care and Education as well as Education Assistant.
The Faculty of Fine and Applied arts consist of three Schools: IDEA School of Design, School of Motion Picture Arts, and School of Performing Arts. Dynamic programs focus on the development of students` skills: creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills, personal and aesthetic values. It is worth mentioning, that Capilano University’s Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts is widely recognized for specialized programs in motion picture arts, animation, music, theatre, costuming, design, and more.
Programs at the Faculty of Global and Community Studies focus on the things that matter to communities such as wellness, good governance, and diversified economies as well as international development and ways to enjoy different cultures and environments through tourism and outdoor recreation.
CapU Admission Requirements vary depending on a chosen program. If English is not the first language of the applicants, they must pass one of the following assessment tests: TOEFL, ELA, Academic IELTS, CAEL, PTE Academic, or DET. Other ways to meet the English language requirement include six credits of post-secondary English that transfer to Capilano University or Advanced Placement English Language/Composition or English Literature/Composition with a minimum mark of 4 and others.
Capilano University offers three exclusive student residences just a short distance from the North Vancouver Campus. Double and Single occupancy options are available.
