Algoma University, commonly known as Algoma U or simply Algoma began its history in 1965 as a college-affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury. In 2008 it became a university and is now the smallest undergraduate-only university in Ontario. Algoma’s main campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie.
Today, Algoma University boasts over 30 high-quality academic programs in a wide range of fields that are represented at the Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Humanities. Algoma U is known all over Northern Ontario for its campus culture, vibrant curriculum programming, research and innovation opportunities, and overall institutional excellence. The university is very proud of its culturally diverse student body and connection with local Anishinaabe heritage.

Close to 2000 undergraduates come from Ontario, other provinces and territories of Canada and from different countries of the world like Bangladesh, China, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mauritius, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, United States, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe. International (who make up 30 percent) and Canadian students learn together and create a unique and intercultural atmosphere on the campus.

Algoma University offers only undergraduate programs but all students are involved in faculty research projects. Research and teaching are viewed as mutually supportive functions for excellence learning. The fields of scientific interest include Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. It is worth mentioning that Algoma University has been granted $166,649 for the 2020/2021 academic year by the Federal Government’s Research Support Fund.
All of the student research opportunities are practically oriented and include Undergraduate Student Research Awards, work placements, and a Summer Employment program. The Algoma Experiential Learning Hub is a valuable resource for students that helps them to find out more about the wide range of experiential learning opportunities. The Hub engages students in hands-on experiences, connects theory to practice, and builds transferable skills that are valued by employers all over the world.
The undergraduate and certificate programs available for students at Algoma U include the fields of Accounting, Business Administration, Community Development, Community Economic and Social Development, Economics, Finance and Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, and Land Stewardship, Biology, Environmental Science, English, Law and Justice, History, Political Sciences, Music, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Visual Arts. Two unique programs on Anishinaabe Studies and Anishinaabemowin focus their attention on the Ojibwe language and culture.
Algoma University also offers Minors that give students an opportunity to explore a secondary program of study beyond the chosen degree program and enhance employment opportunities. The choice of minors includesAccounting, Computer Game Technology, Economics, Environmental Sustainability, French, Geomatics, International Relations, Marketing, Mathematics, Mobile Software Engineering, Music, and Visual Art.
Graduate and Undergraduate Certificate programs are also available at Algoma University. Graduate Certificates are designed for those who have already completed a degree or a diploma program. These courses are tailored to add new skills that are in demand on a modern job market. The choice of certificates covers the areas of Business Administration, Computing, Environmental Science, Health Science, Human Resources and Business Management, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, Mobile Software Development, Project Management.
Undergraduate Certificates are available on a part-time basis and require 30 credits from the certificate discipline. The courses available include Interdisciplinary Aboriginal Learning, Business, Human Resources Management, Accounting, CommunityEconomic, and Social Development, Geomatiсs, Information Technology, Law and Justice, Public Policy and Administration, Social Welfare.
International students who come to Algoma U have many opportunities to learn and improve their English skills. English as Second Language programs were introduced at the university in 2002 and soon they were accredited by Languages Canada. All courses are taught by qualified and experienced instructors who know how to develop communicative skills and improve vocabulary and grammar knowledge. English as a Second Language at Algoma is open to all non-native applicants who want to improve their language skills and get ready for academic studies in Canadian universities. Algoma U offers two types of ESL programs: the English for Academic Purposes Program that is available both, online and in-person, and the Short-Term ESL Program.
Algoma University offers its students a perfect choice of accommodation facilities. The Algoma Dormitory is a large, clean, and secure student residence that provides comfortable, safe, and convenient on-campus accommodation for first-year, direct from high school students. Students have access to all the facilities: fully-furnished bedrooms, shared bathrooms, common rooms with entertainment centerand microwaves, modern study space, elevators, laundry, and high-speed wireless Internet connection. It is worth mentioning, that the Algoma Dormitory gives special priority to students` security and guarantees 24-hour video surveillance in common areas. Weekly cleaning services in all bathrooms and common areas are guaranteed too. Parking is also an option, though students must pay a $5.00 park fee upon each exit or purchase a parking pass for $100 CAD per semester.
Algoma University admission requirements vary depending on the country of the applicant and the standards of the international curriculums. Some degree programs require prerequisite courses. Algoma U is known all over Canada for its high-quality and affordable undergraduate university programs. Its tuition fees are lower than average plus a number of entrance scholarships are available for the applicants. All the residence options are comfortable and affordable.
The average Tuition Fee for the international students is $9470.67 CAD per semester that consists of 15 credits. Tuition Fee for English as a Second Language program is $3500 CAD for the Level 4 or 5. International students are eligible for the Entrance Scholarship. It is worth mentioning, that all international students must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan to be permitted to register. A single student premium plan costs $720 CAD for the period from September 1 to August 31!
