Cape Breton University (CBU) has a long and successful history in the province of Nova Scotia. Founded in 1951 as a campus of St. Francis Xavier University, it quickly transformed into an independent college, and then a successful post-secondary degree-granting university, the only one on Cape Breton Island. 

CBU is a proud member of  the Association of Atlantic Universities, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It is also worth mentioning, that CBU is traditionally mentioned among the Canadian leaders in faculty-student interaction and service-learning spheres. Cape Breton University is located in a beautiful area of pristine nature, vibrant cultures, and welcoming communities. Today the number of its students exceeds 5,500, many of them come to CBU from different corners of the world. Cape Breton University is dedicated to research and problems that concern the general public. Academics, students, and the community are involved in various scholarly projects and debates. Being a small comprehensive university, the CBU performs millions in externally funded research. The University publishes annual research publications in “Research Matters”, and a separate student “Research Matters Magazine”. Many of the projects are being funded by the federal granting councils like the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Atlantic Innovation Fund.  

Cape Breton University has a number of scholarships to offer. Applicants with a high school average 90% plus are eligible for scholarships. Students who take a minimum of 24 credits can also get an in-course scholarship or apply for an in-course bursary, depending on their academic performance. A new CBU Work-Study Bursary Program provides students with financial need with the opportunity for on-campus employment. Aboriginal, First Nations and Métis students of Cape Breton University have access to some additional financial tools.

Cape Breton University offers a wide range of Degree, Diploma, and Certificate programs that are combined with Co-op education, work placements, internships, and work-study programs that allow a smooth transition to working after graduation. Fields of study, available for students` choice include Art, Social Sciences and Culture, Education, Business, Sciences, Health and Well-Being, Engineering, and Technology. Program types available are Certificate, Concentration, Degree, Diploma, Graduate, Major, Major with Specialization, Minor, and Undergraduate.

Cape Breton University School of Arts, Social Sciences and Culture offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment, Bachelor of Arts Community Studies programs, a Diploma program in Public Administration and Management, various types of programs in Anthropology, Applied Theatre, Celtic Culture, Folklore, Communication, English, French, Gender and Women`s Studies, Mi’kmaq Studies, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Religious Studies, Sport and Physical Activity Leadership.

Cape Breton School of Business has a Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Emergency Management, Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management programs, Master for Business Administration in Community Economic Development, Post-Baccalaureate Diploma programs in Business Analytics, Business Management and Supply Chain Management. Programs in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Legal Studies, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management are also available. CBU Education programs include Bachelor of Education, Diploma in Education or Educational Technology, Master of Education, and Master of Education in Sustainability, Creativity, and Innovation. 

Cape Breton University is known all over Canada and North America for its Engineering and Technology programs. Students can choose a Bachelor of Engineering or a Bachelor of Engineering Technology program, programs in Chemical Engineering, Electronics and Control, Manufacturing, Environmental Studies, Petroleum. 

Health and Well-Being programs at CBU include Bachelor of Emergency, Bachelor of Health Sciences in Public Health, Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Nutrition, Major in Sport, or Physical Activity Leadership. Science programs available for a choice at Cape Breton University are Bachelor of Technology in Nautical Science, Bachelor of Science, programs in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physiology. 

CBU is proud of its partnership with the International Centre for English Academic Preparation. Together they offer a number of the English Academic Preparation courses for those international students, who want to enter Cape Breton University but do not have the required English language qualification. The courses allow students to immerse themselves in the academic atmosphere of CBU, learn more about campus life, make friends with other Canadian and international students, and better prepare for the academic studies during the English language enhancement course. After the successful completion of the English Academic Preparation program students are allowed to enter the undergraduate or graduate CBU programs without writing a language test or submitting TOEFL/IELTS scores.

Cape Breton University has a Certified Immigration Consultant who is always ready to assist international students with the transition to life in Canada and integration into the campus and the local community, application for immigration documents, and understanding of the Canadian healthcare system. 

Cape Breton University offers its students three unique, safe, and comfortable residence options - Cabot Residence, Alumni Hall, and Harriss Hall. Cabot Residence offers private bedrooms and bathrooms built around a shared living room and kitchen. Alumni Hall has 35 two-bed dorm rooms and 24 five-bedroom apartment units together with a shared lounge space and laundry facilities on each floor. Harriss Hall offers students single and private dorm rooms, with a mix of private and shared washroom facilities.

CBU Tuition Fee for international students is 8,280 CAD per ten undergraduate-level courses per academic year (30 credits). The Medical Plan is obligatory and costs 744 CAD, International Differential Fees are  8,280 CAD, other fees are 985 CAD and the total tuition cost is 18,289 CAD per year.
